Climbing Lugnaquilla

Lugnaquilla (Irish: Log na Coille, meaning Hollow of the Wood) is Wicklow’s highest peak, and rises to over 3,000 feet behind Aughavannagh Cottage. Lugnaquilla is one of the Irish Munros (peaks over 3000 ft), the 13th highest mountain in Ireland and the highest in the province of Leinster and looks down on this Wicklow Cottage from the most central part of the mountains. Lugnaquilla is visible from many parts of the Wicklow Way.

Climbing Lugnaquilla provides an exhilarating challenge for the energetic and experienced who will be rewarded with spectacular views from the summit. For those who want to go hill walking in Wicklow,on a clear day it may be possible to see the distant mountains of Snowdonia in North Wales. There are several routes and it isn’t difficult to plan a hike to ascend one route and descend by way of a different track - finsihing perhaps in Glenmalure with a pint in the Glenmalure Lodge pub!

For those looking to rent a Wicklow Cottage with easy access to the mountain, Aughavannagh Cottage is an ideal base located on the Wicklow Way. As ever, in Wicklow the basic rules of hill walking and mountain safety should be heeded and unaccompanied attempts on the summit are to be avoided, as the cliffs of the South Prison (visible from Aughavannagh Cottage) are treacherous.
