If you want to rent a self catering cottage near Arklow, Aughavannagh Cottage is the ideal Wicklow holiday home, only just over half an hour’s scenic drive away from this Wicklow seaside town via the village of Aughrim. The name Arklow is derived from the Old Norse words Arnkell-lág – the meadow of Arnkell (a Viking chief). The Irish name for the town is An tInbhear Mór, meaning ‘the great estuary’.

Arklow is a historic town and Arklow has played a key role in Wicklow history, being the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the 1798 rebellion. Arklow sits on the Avoca River and the Nineteen Arches bridge has an interesting claim to fame as the longest cut stone bridge in Ireland. Arklow is also situated just south of Brittas Bay – a beautiful blue flag beach popular with visitors who rent our Irish vacation cottage. The town boast a wide range of shops, supermarkets and restaurants.
